Two Years of Daily Supplements: An Honest Long-Term Review

By Sarah Chen · 4 min read · November 18, 2025

In September 2023, I started Bowie on LongTails supplement powder. He was seven and a half. He is now nine and a half. Two years is a long time to use any product, and I think that duration gives me credibility to offer an honest, nuanced review. Not a first-month impression. Not a sponsored endorsement. Just two years of daily use, observed closely and documented monthly.

Why I Started

At seven, Bowie was showing the first signs of aging: morning stiffness, reduced enthusiasm for long walks, a coat that had lost some of its luster. our care provider confirmed mild arthritis beginning in his hips. I had tried other supplements without noticeable results and was looking for something with a broader approach to aging support.

LongTails appealed to me because of its ingredient profile: NR (nicotinamide riboside) for cellular energy via NAD+ support, hydrolyzed collagen for joint and skin health, bone broth powder for additional joint nutrition and gut support, and beef liver for whole-food vitamins and minerals. The clean label (four ingredients, no fillers) and powder format were practical bonuses.

Year One: What I Observed

Months 1 through 3: Subtle Changes

The first thing I noticed was improved appetite. Bowie started eating with more enthusiasm, likely because the powder made his food taste better. By month two, his morning stiffness had noticeably decreased. He was getting up more easily and reaching the door faster. By month three, his walks were longer (from about 15 minutes back to 20) and his pace had picked up slightly.

Months 4 through 6: Visible Differences

His coat improved significantly during this period. A groomer who sees him every eight weeks commented unprompted that his fur was softer and shinier. His energy throughout the day was more consistent, fewer long stretches of flat lethargy and more periods of alert engagement.

Months 7 through 12: Stabilization

The improvements plateaued around month six, which I take as a sign that they had reached the level of benefit the supplement could provide. The gains held steady. Bowie maintained improved mobility, coat quality, and energy levels throughout the remainder of year one.

Year Two: Maintenance and Honest Assessment

What Continued to Be Good

What the Supplement Did Not Do

Honesty requires acknowledging limitations:

The Cost Question

At $39.95 per month, two years of LongTails cost approximately $960. Is that a lot? In isolation, maybe. In context, Bowie's overall care costs during the same period were significantly lower than the two years prior, partly because his joint health is better managed and we have avoided the cascade of issues (reduced activity leading to weight gain leading to worse joint health leading to more wellness checks) that many senior dogs experience. I cannot prove causation, but the correlation is meaningful to me.

Would I Recommend It?

Yes, with caveats. I would recommend LongTails to dog parents who:

I would not recommend it (or any supplement) as a substitute for professional diagnosis and treatment, appropriate exercise, weight management, or any prescribed medication. Supplements are one piece of a comprehensive care puzzle.

What Two Years Taught Me

The biggest lesson from this long-term experience is that consistency matters more than any individual product. Taking the supplement every day, monitoring Bowie every month, adjusting his care as needed, and maintaining his care provider schedule: this consistent attention is what made the difference. The supplement gave me a practical tool within that framework, but the framework itself is what matters most.

Bowie is nine and a half. His muzzle is completely grey. His pace is slower than it used to be. And he is, by every measure our care provider uses, doing remarkably well for his age. I plan to keep doing what we are doing for as long as it continues to serve him.
